Incorrect, please read the Game Effect in Chapter 1 and/or the Harming Level 7 Spell for more details, but each hit has one cumulative effect:
1-17 Energy Drain: Merged with Strength Drain; redefined as:
-1 weapon damage
-10 Slay damage
-10 Backstab damage
-1 Caster Level

For this update, as well as a summary of all 2018 rules updates, please read this thread.

I didn't see a note on the update thread, but the reason for the change was to clean up gameplay, particularly in combat, when hit with Energy Drain.

The back and forth math for split class, as well as what was lost, was hard to manage quickly. With the revisions, it's clear for damage as well as casters, and a little more comprehensive across all classes now.

I read that.

So, all those affects apply for each hit?

ie.
I'm 10/10/10 ftr/rog/caster,

If I get hit with one spell then I become 8/9/9 and lost my lvl 10 slay, lvl 9 ftr (+5 becomes +4), lvl 10 backstab and lvl 10 spells?

cumulative???

And this spell is less than lvl 15???

omg

or am I misunderstanding?

sorry if I'm being dense, I did read that thread.

Yes, and yes, and no (not misunderstanding).

Cumulative yes, but Immunities, Protections, and Restores exist through skills, spells, and items as well for both PCs and NPCs.

The Restores also now restore all levels for both spells and potions as well.

It's replacing a stacking -7 per damage that rendered 99.9% of creatures useless with 2-3 spells, too. We'll see how it plays out, and if it needs adjusted on the PC spell side, we'll evaluate it.

Wait, thats not correct right?

Brifs example of being a 10f/10r/10c hit once by drain, you would be 10f/10r/9c and just lose 10 off a slay, 10 off a backstab and minus 1 damage.

Second hit would be 10f/10/r/8c, -20 to slays and stabs, and minus 2 to swings.

This is to simplify it so rogues and fighters dont have to remember where in their list the slays and +damages are correct?

This also allows a fighter to still use something like paralyzing strike while drained since you are still technically level 10, you just have noodle arms now

Ah, yes sorry you are correct that his example is partially incorrect. Energy Drain doesn’t affect Class levels, just the effective damage and spell levels able to be cast for each Energy Drain level effect.

Fighter and rogue levels are unaffected, just weapon, slay, and backstab damage. You wouldn’t lose Use Mana Foci, pick locks etc, nor any skills or abilities not based on weapon damage.

As for Casters, you lose effective Spell casting levels only, and as with fighters and rogues, you do not lose any skills or abilities that are level dependent. While the class and spell levels are the same 1-10, only the spell casting levels are affected.

I read too fast through Henry’s question so thanks for catching that! This is why I can’t be brief. :p

That is still confusing, IMO.
